Movement Strategies and Tactics

GCO 2 Students will develop strategies and tactics to participate in a variety of activities.

SCO 2.1 Refine a variety of tactics that can be used in simple games and activities.

Concepts and Content: Tactics for tag games: varying pathways, speed, direction or level; increasing or decreasing space; use fakes.

I can:

change direction quickly to avoid getting tagged.

           avoid getting trapped.

The lesson today will focus on aspects of tag, retrieving or “stealing” pylons from another team, dodging, starting and stopping quickly

Introduction

Blow whistle to get students’ attention. They will know this signal means getting into their special spots for class

Entry Activity: (warm-up)5 mins

Up and Down

Divide class into two teams. One team is UP and the other is DOWN. Place Solo cups on the black center line. Half of the cups need to be upright (UP team’s) and half need to be upside down (DOWN team’s). At "Go," teams race to flip cups over to their designated direction—up or down. When you blow the whistle, the teams need to stop. Whichever team has the most cups pointing their way wins. Repeat game play.

APK

Ask students if they understand what dodging is. Have a student demonstrate. Were they correct? Explain the proper method for dodging in SFL.

Skill Development & Practice: 10 mins

Dodging

Describe that dodging is when you move quickly to change direction. It is a skill used when you are trying not to be tagged, going around a pylon or trying not to be hit by the dodge ball. It is also a skill that is important to learn so you do not run into another player in the gym while you are playing. Demonstrate dodging using the cues below

How To

SFL

  1. You need to keep your eyes up and looking forward in the direction of travel throughout the dodge

Keep your head up and eyes looking forward in the direction you are headed.

  1. Keep your body low during the change of direction

Bend your knees and stay low like you’re sneaking around.

  1. Change direction with just one step

Just use one step to go another way

  1. Repeat the action from left to right and right to left

Do it again from the beginning!

Place pylons along the center line of the gym, with enough space in between for students to dodge around them. Have students line up and demonstrate again what a dodge is, this time going through and around the pylons

Assessment

Check for learning throughout demonstrations/game play with questions and observations.

Develop the Instruction

Culminating Activity- 10 mins

Capture the Cone- The object of this game is to get the most pylons into your key from the opposite team.

Set Up

  • The outer lines of the gym are the boundaries for this game.

  • The center line and the top of the key will also be used in game play.

  • You will need 24 pylons- 12 placed at the top of each key.

  • Students are broken into two teams; each team takes a side of the gym.

Game Play

Players will cross the center line boundary into the opposite team’s territory to retrieve a pylon and bring it safely back to their key without being tagged. If tagged the player must have a seat and wait for a player from their team to tag them to free them. Once tagged both players can return to their side and resume playing once more. If a player makes it to the opponent's territory without being tagged, they may stand safely with one foot in the key. They can pick up a pylon and return to their side. Once their foot leaves the key, they are no longer safe and can be tagged. If tagged, they must return the pylon to their opponent's key and sit down where they were initially caught and wait to be freed. Players cannot guard their teams' pylons. Play for

Closure

Cool-down 5 mins

Go through these poses a few times, demonstrating the proper form for students.

  1. Did I alter my goals or instructional plan as I taught the lesson? Why? (Components 1e and 3e)

  1. If I had the opportunity to teach this lesson again to this group of students, what would I do differently? Why? (Component 4a)
