SFL

I can create a text and organize my text to have a beginning, middle and end.

Introduction 10 minutes

Say Good morning to the students as you great them at the door. Take attendance after the bell.

APK/Hook

Read the short story “See Spot Run”

Ask the students what the main idea of the story is (we learned about the main ideas last week). Then ask the students what happened at the beginning of the book. Then the middle, then the end. This will help students access prior knowledge from earlier grades.

Explain how good pieces of writing have a beginning, middle and end.

For Narrative writing the beginning is where the character(s) are introduced or the “WHO”. The middle of the story usually is about the problem or “WHAT”, and the end is usually how the problem gets solved.

Assessment

Formative assessment:

  • Observe and note behaviours that suggest students’ understanding that print conveys a message, e.g., constructing meaning through drawing/writing or explaining the meaning of their drawings or reading back their writing.

  • Analyze growth through dated writing samples from students’ portfolios/journals.

Summative assessment:

  • Standardized testing at the end of the unit.

Develop the Instruction40 minutes

Interactive handout: Ask if anyone knows what chronological means. Go over the definition. Tell students that as a class we will be selecting the appropriate text box and place it in chronological order. Explain how currently the events of this story are not in order of the beginning middle and end. Draw popsicle sticks and ask students to come up to the smart board and move one event into its appropriate place. Do this in chronological order. Ask the first student which box they think happened first. And so forth.

Putting events in chronological order means: listing them in the order in which they happened.

Read out each sentence before beginning. Once complete read in the order placed and ask the class if what was read “Makes sense”.  Make any corrections as a class.

Now hand out the 3 square graphic organizers. Tell students they are going to write their own story. It can be true or made up. It can be about what they did on the weekend or what they want to do next weekend. Go over that in the first square they will write about the introduction/beginning (WHO). In the second square they will write the middle (WHAT) and in the third square they can write the ending (HOW). Students are welcome to add extra details in the squares. Go over the example in power point. Students can draw pictures in boxes to go with the story before or after they write their sentences. Tell students this is a “rough copy” and when they are finished, we will begin working on a good copy to turn it into their own story books. Go around the room and help students with spelling and grammar.

Closure10 minutes

In the last 10 minutes of class have any students that want to come up to the front and read their stories to the class.
