Preliminary Lesson Plan

Mathematics

K

GCO - Develop Number Sense

SCO: N1: Say the number sequence by 1s starting anywhere from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 1.

SFL- I can count from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 1.

Attention Getter- Shut lights off and turn them on again when you have their attention.

Hook: It is time for the Daily Calendar

Bring students to sit on the floor in front of the calendar and ask questions-

  • Does anyone remember what day Friday was?

  • Who would like to come up and count the days, starting at the beginning of the month, with me?

  • What number comes before

  • What number comes after?

APK:

  • Adding sequencing numbers to count to 100 days on a large circular-segmented caterpillar that creeps above the chalkboard. We can count again from 1 and move ahead to today’s date. We will also begin at 10 and count back to 1.

  • We can count beads on the counter string to keep track of our days, changing colors when we get to 10

  • Time to get into our Rocketship positions (children will crouch down) and start counting backwards to 1. 10, 9,8,7, 6....and BLAST OFF (jump up!) on 1

Formative Assessment- Stations

  • Roll dice and place that number of counters (apples) on a tree. Work with children to see if they understand the relationship between the dots on the dice and the counters for the tree.

  • Roll dice and place a coordinating number of similarly colored beads on a pipe cleaner. Remove beads, counting back from the larger number to the smaller number.

SCO- N2: Recognize, at a glance, and name familiar arrangements of 1 to 5 objects or dots.

SFL- I can see and count 1 to 5 things, even if they are in a different pattern or shape.

Attention Getter- Shut lights off and turn them on again when you have their attention.

Hook: Have students sit on the mat in front of the Smart Board. Begin with Jack Hartman’s “subitize up to 5”

APK: Play a game on the smartboard that shows students arrangements of numbers 1-5. Play as a group to begin and then call individual students to come up to answer.

Formative Assessment - Hand out the following worksheets. Have students work on sheets at their desks. Walk around to assist and discover how they are doing with answering.
